Sculpture My real love has been the sculpture. The three-dimensionality of a piece, the complexity of working 360 degrees is a great challenge. I have experimented with many different materials including clay, wood, feathers, bone and semiprecious stones. I experience a special affinity for stone sculpture. I began my stone carving career in 1981, studying with Laurie Goulet at the Art Students’ League in New York City. Most recently I studied in St. Louis with Damian Manuhwa and Rachael Ndandarika of the Chapungu People of Zimbabwe. For me, stone has its own power and that is what attracts me to the medium. It is the depth, weight and intensity of this natural substance that speaks to me. I draw on this when I am working with the stone and I receive a sense of strength from the stone. I regard my stone work as abstract figurative in nature. I am fascinated with the intertwining of figures and faces and how they can both stand alone and merge into one another. This sculptural view gives to the piece a dynamic movement and content that emerge from the density of the stone, transforming the static-ness of the raw stone into movement. |
